Existing slab evaluations and assessments

Our field consultants conduct project-specific slab assessments to document observable conditions, evaluate potential contributors to distress, and present findings supported by the information and testing available within the agreed scope. Depending on access to slab areas, records, sampling, and the nature of the distress, additional investigation may be required before a cause can be established with reasonable engineering confidence. Services may include:

  • Visual condition surveys and distress mapping (cracking, curling, spalling, delamination, joint deterioration, etc.)
  • Pre-acquisition due diligence and pre-lease slab condition evaluations
  • Forensic root-cause investigation for cracking, settlement, performance failures, etc.
  • Assisting in disputes and claims resolutions
  • Slab maintenance planning and long-term performance evaluations
  • Repair strategy development and remedial specifications
  • Evaluate repair contractor’s bids and qualifications

Concrete Non-Destructive Testing

SSI performs non-destructive and, when appropriate, limited semi-destructive testing to evaluate selected slab characteristics such as thickness, reinforcement location, uniformity, surface condition, moisture, or indicators of distress. Each testing method is selected based on project-specific requirements and limitations, and results may require correlation with historical records, destructive verification and evaluation, laboratory analysis, or engineering interpretation. Our services include testing such as:

  • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) — slab thickness, locations of reinforcement, post-tension cable, and embedded utilities
  • Impact Echo Testing — delamination, voids, and internal defect detection
  • Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity (UPV) Testing — concrete uniformity, density, and defect assessment
  • Rebound Hammer (Schmidt Hammer) Testing — in-place surface hardness and relative strength screening
  • Half-Cell Potential Testing — for corrosion assessment of reinforcing steel
  • Chain Drag / Sounding Surveys — for delamination and hollow-area detection
  • Petrographic Analysis — SSI provides petrographic analysis through trusted third?party laboratories, allowing us to integrate microscopic concrete evaluation into our forensic investigations when needed.
  • Abrasion Resistance Testing — surface durability evaluation for high-traffic and industrial floors
  • Mohs Hardness - provides a quick, non?destructive way to evaluate the abrasion resistance of the concrete’s surface.
  • Joint Stability & Load-Transfer Testing - measures how much slab’s joints move under loaded wheeled traffic
  • Concrete Resistivity Testing - Concrete resistivity testing measures how easily electrical current moves through a slab, giving a fast, non?destructive indicator of its permeability, moisture condition, and overall durability.
  • Slip Resistance Testing - measures how much traction a floor surface provides by quantifying its coefficient of friction
  • Gloss Testing - measures surface reflectivity to evaluate finish quality, coating performance, and compliance with robotics or optical?sensor requirements
  • Surface Roughness Testing (Ra/Rz Profiling) — quantifies micro?texture to assess slip resistance, coating compatibility, and wheeled?traffic performance
  • Bond (Pull Off) Testing — determines the adhesion strength of coatings, overlays, or repair materials.

3D Scanning & Digital Floor Profiling

SSI uses terrestrial laser scanning and digital profiling technology to capture highly accurate, data-rich models of existing slab conditions:

  • Terrestrial Laser Scanning (3D Scanning) - flatness, levelness, curvature, and elevation mapping across an entire floor
  • High-resolution tolerance mapping for automation and robotics-ready facilities
  • Digital floor profiling for F-Number and Fmin compliance verification
  • As-built documentation for facility records and future planning
